When restoring a finish, that means that the existing finish is saved, prepare and more of the same type of finish is applied on top of the original finish.
I bought a scratched 3 legged desk at a local auction because I loved the design, brought it to Mark who, within a week, gave me the most beautiful piece of furniture back.
He showed me the beauty of the burled walnut grain and asked what color I wanted, when I hesitated and asked him for advice, he showed me what it would look like with different colors.
The work performed was exquisite so I brought six different chairs in various stages of disrepair to be refinished and am absolutely thrilled with my, now, quite valuable pieces.
If the area has turned darker, that the water or moisture has penetrated the finish and has touched the wood.
The only way to remove that darker mark is to strip off the existing finish and treat the darker mark with axcolic acid to remove the mark and then vinegar to neutralize the mark.
If the water damaged area has turned cloudy and white, the moisture has been trapped in the finish.
The moisture can be removed by rubbing the area with alcohol.
You can use denatured alcohol, rubbing alcohol or an industrial alcohol you buy at a hardware store.
