Services
We were one of the first large direct importers of Asian antique furniture in the western United States.
We love Asia and are constantly planning trips to new areas to learn about the people, their culture and yes, their antique furniture!
We typically travel to China or Tibet once a year and have accumulated a deep background and knowledge of Asian furniture along with a very large inventory of many different styles and types of pieces from all over China, Mongolia and Tibet.
Through the years, we have built a rich resource network of over 50 dealers throughout China and Tibet.
Large Chinese cabinets were one of the backbones of classical Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) home decor.
Homes were spacious and usually accommodated an extended family as well as plentiful service staff so the furniture needed to be proportionally large.
Hardwood cabinets with detailed carving and ornamentation would have been reserved for the master's immediate family and other highly stationed relatives while plainer cabinets of more inferior woods were used to outfit the quarters of the balance of the household.
Having a wider application in the classical Chinese household, small cabinets were more varied in shape and size than larger cabinets.
Generally, plainer cabinets with less ornamentation were popular in the North while the Southern Provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangsu produced painted and carved pieces.
Their original uses were similar to our use of these same antique cabinets today.
Many were originally locking and contained hidden hiding spaces for valuables.
Style, shape and joinery techniques varied by region and province.
Tables come in a variety of forms according to their use in the classical Chinese home.
The altar table was used to hold the family shrine and make offerings to honor the deceased ancestors.
Tea and flower tables were for decorative use and formal entertaining.
Dining and gaming tables were generally found only in the wealthier households as they required the use of chairs.
Low square tables were reserved for use on the k'ang, a heated brick platform which was the center of daily life.
K'angs are still found in rural Chinese homes today.
Stools were the primary seating in most Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) homes, chairs being reserved for the very wealthy.
They often contained space for storage as well.
Benches were more commonly found in public places such as theatres and temples.
Generally speaking, older stools and benches are lower to the ground and became higher with successive years and European influence.
Style, shape and joinery techniques varied by region and province.
These regional differences coupled with woods used help us identify age and province of origin for most of these antique Chinese stools and benches.
