Every piece of art is treated with care and given meticulous attention. Las Negras maintains detailed documentation to ensure the integrity and authenticity of it's historical value. For more than 25 years, Las Negras Studio has built an enduring reputation for providing comprehensive services in frame-making, painting restoration, antique restoration/replication and special finishes.

It maintains the highest quality craftsmanship available in the Dallas area. Carlos Espinosa, owner of Las Negras Studio, learned his craft through classical art training at the Royal Fine Arts Academy of San Fernanado - in Madrid Spain, his native country. He opened his studio to painting and frame restoration in 1985, after twelve years of apprenticeship at John Douglass Picture Frames.

The business has since grown to a seven-man operation with each craftsman trained in a specific area of expertise. Under his direction, each member of the staff has developed years of experience dedicated to providing the finest in old world workmanship.
Services
All custom frames and furniture are drawn to scale and created by hand making each piece as a one of a kind piece of art.
Our 11,000 sq.ft workshop is divided into three distinct sections.
The first area is comprised of our showroom, where clients may select from our classical hand-carved samples, design original concepts for furniture making or discuss the restoration treatments for paintings or art objects.
We also reserve a large area for safe storage of all pieces approved for restoration.
Adjacent to the showroom are the studios for painting conservation and special finishes.
This picture demonstrates the sgrafitto technique which consists of scratching a design through a solid coat of tempera to reveal the gold leaf underneath.
When selecting a frame for a painting, we start the creative process by determining the proper style of the frame corresponding to the period of the painting as well ast the client's personal taste.
Frame samples on display include American, Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish.
We can also duplicate frames from antique book designs or provided images when samples are not available.
Our painting studio's policy follows the code of ethics established by the American Institute for Conservation (AIC).
The painting conservation process begins with a visual examination that enables us to suggest possible treatments to the client.
Detailed photographic documentation is taken of the art work to record its' condition before treatment is begun.
After visual and chemical analysis, an estimate is written and sent to the client for approval.
At this stage, a plan of action is discussed and procedures determined for maintaining the integrity of the piece without compromising the historical value.
